What a great year! Well, today is the last day of the school year and we have had a fantastic year in Art! I have thoroughly enjoyed exploring art with all my students this year. I wish you all a fabulous summer! See you in August!
I can't believe that we have already embarked on the 4th quarter of the school year. No worries though, we are still very busy learning, creating and exploring Art!
PreK and Kindergarten have been celebrating the beginning of Spring with beautiful, bright and colorful artworks. 1st and 2nd grade are starting their Ceramics unit and will be elbows deep in clay over the next few weeks. 3rd grade is exploring Chalk Pastels and color blending. 4th grade is combining Ceramics with Weaving. They have made their own looms and will be starting their weavings. 5th grade is exploring Photography as well as creating Ceramic Wind Chimes. Pics to follow soon! This quarter we are exploring more art techniques and styles through creative projects.
In Prek, we are finishing up our Wild Thing puppets and stage inspired by the book, Where the Wild Things Are, by Marcus Sendak. Kindergarten is making Flower collages using tissue paper. 1st grade is learning about Pointillism, a style of art using dots to create color, pattern and texture. We are reading the book, Art & Max, and our creating our own chameleons inspired by the book utilizing the pointillism technique. 2nd grade is learning how to create 3D shapes in drawing. They are created a 3D shape Color Wheel. 3rd grade is learning about Surrealism and is studying the art of Spanish artist, Joan Miro. Students are creating their own original artwork inspired by Miro, using shapes and lines. 4th grade is beginning learning and Ceramics and Weaving. They are created their own looms out of clay and will create a yarn weaving using their loom. 5th grade has been learning about 1-point perspective and is creating a personalized cityscape using 1-point perspective and other drawing techniques. I am looking forward to new Art Workshops beginning next week. Currently, K-2nd grade Art Workshop is FULL. There are still a few spots available in 3rd-5th grade.

Recycling Poster Contest
What is it about? A poster contest to spread awareness of the need to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. When is it? Contest begins today and ends on Monday, November 14th. What do I need to do? Create a colorful poster representing at least 1 of the 3 R’s of Recycling. Use an 11x17 size poster board. Color in bright colors. Use markers, colored pencils, paint, or crayons. Reduce = Use less Reuse = Use again Recycle = Find a new use for material Winners will be announced at Chapel on Friday, November 18th. We are well on our way in our adventures in Art.
PreK has been studying the Color Wheel and have created their own color wheels using the letters of their name. Kindergarten has been creating their own Rainbow Fish inspired by the Book, Rainbow Fish, by Marcus Pfister. They are creating a 3D aquarium for their Rainbow Fish complete with seaweed, coral and other sea life. 1st grade had been learning about the Russian Abstract Artist, Wassily Kandinsky and his Circle paintings. Students have also been learning about the color wheel. They painted their own color wheels inspired by the concentric circles in Kandinsky's artwork. 2nd grade has been learning about VIncent Van Gogh and looking at his Sunflower paintings. Students have created their own version of Sunflowers in a vase or a large voomed in flower and painting them with watercolor and tempera paints. 3rd grade has been learning about the Huichol Yarn Paintings. Students are creating their own yarn paintings inspired by the yarn paintings of the Huichol people. 4th Grade is also studying the works of Wassily Kandinsky, specifically his geometric paintings using line and shape. Students have learned how to use a compass and ruler in their drawing and have created their own original designs. They have also been learning coloring techniques using colored pencils. 5th grade has been learning about Notans, a Japanese design concept contrasting light and dark, positive and negative shapes. Students have also been learning about the difference between organic and geometric shapes. Students have created their own original designs using cut construction paper.
